Fantasy Flower Workshop - Poole Lace Makers
Mainly Lace were invited by the Poole Lacemakers to run a workshop at their recent lace day. Pat and Barbara assisted the ladies to create one of Mainly Laces' famous Fantasy Flower designs.
We arrived in Bournemouth on Friday 11th June, expecting to find a quiet seaside town enjoyed by the “older” members of Society – WRONG. Bournemouth is apparently the Stag and Hen weekend venue on the South Coast. Fortunately, our hotel was not near the sea front but we did have fun spotting the Bride or Groom amongst the revelers. Brides usually sporting headdress, veil etc and Grooms wearing the same attire.
We found the lace day on Saturday without too many detours and had a warm welcome and were shown where our tables were. The morning's trading passed very quickly and lunch, which was a very large ploughmans, was delicious. In the afternoon Barbara gave a talk on recognising different types of threads. Quite a complex subject, but with lots of samples to show and handle, hopefully some of the difficulties in recognizing gassed from mercerized, cotton from linen, /2 and /3, and what staple means were explained. Even though our audience was very knowledgeable we were able to explain a few things that were confusing or generally misunderstood.
We had a leisurely breakfast on the Sunday as we didn’t think we had too far to go to Poole, but the Sat.Nav. had other ideas and we went the pretty way. We arrived at the hall on time and all of the ladies were ready with bobbins wound and coffee waiting.
After handing out the patterns we began. Most conquered putting in beads, but pivot pins took a little longer to master for some. By mid morning all were working well and by lunchtime most had made at least two petals. After lunch, which we ate outside in the sun, Barbara showed how to make the stamens and make up the finished flowers. The rest of the afternoon was spent trying to get as many petals made as possible and all went home with most of the flower made. We hope to see them completed the next time we are in Poole.
Thank you ladies, we had a wonderful weekend, (including a concert by the Black Dyke Band on Sat. Evening) and hope to see you all again soon.
